
John R. Kirk’s contributions to Boise Little Theater span over three decades of storytelling, stagecraft, and service. A talented director, actor, and behind-the-scenes contributor, John served as President during the 1967–68 season and Vice President the year prior, playing a vital leadership role during a pivotal era in the theater’s history.
John began his BLT journey onstage as Dolan in Mister Roberts (1953) and went on to perform in a wide range of roles—from the comedic Earl Lindquist in The Tender Trap to the beloved Bob Cratchit in A Christmas Carol. His performances were heartfelt and memorable, including standout characters in Detective Story (2nd Cat Burglar), Ladies in Retirement (Albert Feather), and Take Her, She’s Mine (Frank Michaelson).
As a director, John helmed an impressive number of productions, including The Man Who Came to Dinner, King of Hearts, Sabrina Fair, George Washington Slept Here, No Time for Sergeants, Auntie Mame, and The Lady Who Cried Fox. He was known for bringing both humor and humanity to the stage, whether directing full-scale productions or lending his talents to special events like BLT’s Annual Christmas Party.
John’s passion for theater extended well beyond performance and direction. He contributed to set construction, lighting installation, house management, ushering, and even artwork for production programs. A frequent board member and a reliable presence backstage, John’s commitment never wavered, even as his roles evolved over time.
With an eye for detail, a love for character work, and a deep dedication to community theater, John Kirk left a legacy of leadership, laughter, and craftsmanship at Boise Little Theater that continues to resonate through its productions and people today.
