(1964-1965, 1968-1969)

Maynard Smith’s name is woven into the very fabric of Boise Little Theater. For over four decades, he was a steadfast presence onstage, backstage, and behind the scenes—generously lending his time, talents, and heart to nearly every aspect of production and operations.

From his earliest contributions in the 1950s as a set builder and character actor, Maynard quickly became an indispensable force. His acting credits include memorable roles such as Rev. Dr. Harper in Arsenic and Old Lace, Dr. Chumley in Harvey, and Mr. Harvey in Flowers for Algernon. His performances spanned both comedy and drama, always delivered with his trademark charm and dedication.

But it was backstage where Maynard’s influence truly radiated. He served as stage manager, assistant director, lighting and sound technician, and set constructor for dozens of shows. A two-time president of BLT (1964–65 and 1968–69), he also chaired grounds and building committees, coordinated past presidents, and led the Capital Funds campaign throughout the 1980s.

Alongside his wife, Helen, he devoted years to supervising house management, welcoming thousands of patrons with warmth and reliability. The couple were not only recognized for their hands-on involvement, but also as longtime supporters through their patron memberships spanning more than 30 seasons. Helen was the other Wardrobe Queen.

Maynard was honored with a Lifetime Patron Membership in 1982 and received the prestigious “Gold Key” award in 1991–92—testaments to his enduring legacy.

Whether building sets, ushering audiences, guiding fellow volunteers, or lighting up the stage, Maynard Smith embodied the spirit of community theater: humble, hardworking, and full of heart.
