(1986-1988)

Nancy Shankweiler’s legacy at Boise Little Theater spans more than six decades of unwavering devotion, artistic excellence, and behind-the-scenes commitment. From her early acting roles to her later years as a guiding force for the theater’s scholarship program, Nancy’s fingerprints can be found on nearly every aspect of BLT’s evolution.

Nancy’s first credited work with the theater came in the late 1950s as a properties manager and actor, quickly establishing herself as both a versatile performer and a reliable team member. She captivated audiences in roles such as Helen Sherman in The Seven Year Itch, Sarah in Guys and Dolls, Emily Webb in Our Town, Curley’s Wife in Of Mice and Men, and Ruth in Blithe Spirit. Her ability to bring nuance and depth to her characters earned her critical acclaim throughout the 1960s and 70s.

But Nancy’s talents extended well beyond the stage. She worked tirelessly as a director (Gigi, The Miracle Worker, The Corn Is Green, Ten Little Indians, Wait Until Dark, Our Town, I Never Sang for My Father, and more), assistant director, costumer, set constructor, house manager, make-up designer, Gazette editor, and board member. Her direction often earned accolades, including multiple “Best Director” and “Best Production” awards.

In the 1986–87 season, Nancy was elected President of Boise Little Theater and continued to lead by example, juggling executive duties while staying hands-on in productions and house operations. Her leadership was marked by collaboration, inclusivity, and an unyielding commitment to BLT’s artistic mission.

Perhaps most enduring is Nancy’s long-standing role as Scholarship Chair, a position she held with distinction for over two decades. Her efforts helped hundreds of students access educational opportunities in the arts, fostering the next generation of creatives and continuing BLT’s tradition of nurturing talent.

Whether she was in the spotlight, building a set, mentoring young artists, or greeting patrons, Nancy Shankweiler served as a steadfast pillar of the Boise Little Theater community. Her passion, talent, and heart have left an indelible mark on the stage and in the lives of all who were lucky enough to work alongside her.
